The Two-Week Window: When to Clean Your Gutters This Fall

Every October our phone rings with some version of the same question: is it too early to clean my gutters yet? It's a fair question, and the timing matters more than most homeowners think. Clean too early and you'll be doing it again in a month. Wait too long and you're scraping frozen sludge out of a gutter in December.

WHY TIMING MATTERS

Around Columbus, the leaves don't all come down at once. Ash and walnut tend to drop early, maples go next, and oaks hang on stubbornly well into November. If you clean your gutters in the first week of October, half the tree is still overhead waiting to fill them right back up.

The sweet spot for most Central Ohio homes is the stretch from late October into mid-November, after the bulk of the leaves are down but before the first hard freeze. That's the cleaning that carries you through winter, and it's the one that actually protects your home.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU MISS IT

A gutter packed with wet leaves in December isn't just clogged, it's frozen. Water can't drain, so it sits, freezes overnight, thaws a little in the afternoon, and freezes again. That cycle repeats all winter. The ice adds weight the gutter was never designed to carry, pushes at the seams, and can pull the whole run loose from the fascia. Meanwhile, the water that can't get through your gutters is running down your siding and soaking the ground right next to your foundation.

HOW MANY CLEANINGS DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED?

For most homes, twice a year does it: once in late spring and once in late fall. But if you have big mature trees close to the house, especially oaks or pines, you may need an early-fall pass to clear the first wave, then a second cleaning after the rest comes down. That's not an upsell, it's just what your trees are doing. We'll tell you honestly which situation you're in when we look at your roof.

SCHEDULE NOW, EVEN IF THE DATE IS LATER

Here's the practical part. October is when everyone in Central Ohio remembers their gutters at the same time, and the calendar fills up fast. The homeowners who get the ideal date are the ones who call a few weeks ahead and book it. You can schedule now for early November and put it out of your mind.

While we're out, we don't just clear the gutters. We pull debris from the roof valleys and from behind the chimney where it collects, blow and flush the gutters, test every downspout to make sure it runs clear, and tell you exactly what shape your system is in.
